03-24-98 Albert E. Fulford, Toronto, June 16, 1957 - Albert E. (Ab) Fulford, 52, general day editor at Toronto of The Canadian Press, died in his sleep today.
A native of Ottawa, he was a veteran of nearly 35 years in the service of the national news cooperative, having joined CP at Ottawa in 1922 after brief experience as a junior with The Citizen.
In the CP tradition, Mr. Fulford was an all-'round newspaper man, experienced as both editor and reporter, in both general news and sport. In the general day editor's job at head office he was responsible for direction of news wires serving 100 daily newspapers across the 10 provinces.
His service included some notable reporting, including coverage of the Royal tour of 1939, in which he travelled from coast to coast to report the reception at city and town and railway siding of the then King and Queen. News readers perhaps knew him best for his years of work on the Dionne quintuplets story. A close friend of Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe, he represented the newspapers of Canada as pallbearer when the quintuplets' doctor died in 1943.
He served in CP bureaus at Ottawa, Toronto and New York, usually as a deskman but frequently detached to cover some major news event. In sport, his assignments ranged from routine coverage of football and hockey to correlation of the detailed coverage of a Grey Cup game.
He is survived by his wife, the former Frances Blount, of Ottawa, and four children -- Mrs. Warren Gee and Mrs. George Gould, and Robert and Wayne, of Toronto -- as well as two brothers, Marshall, of Detroit, and Arthur, of Toronto, and two sisters, Mrs. James Cook and Mrs. Patrick Ryan, both of Ottawa.
