ACKNOWLEDGMENTS and Modification Notes
This program is a combination of the Indexed Gedcom Method by Tim Doyle and Randy Winch,
and the WebbedGed method by Dan Pidcock and Paul Rawlins, with modifications by Lola Pigott.
These programs are all copyrighted by the authors.
Modifications include:
1. Adapting the individual's display format from WebbedGed into IGM display methodology.
The advantages of this are:
a. A nicer looking (in this user's opinon) display for the individual's page.
b. Show the individual's parents and grandparents in "tree" form.
c. Show the children of each spouse in "tree" form.
d. Display vital statistics about every person shown on individual's page. This
aids in identifying the individual.
e. Included "Reference #" and "Alias" in vital statistics display, making it
easier to identify a specific individual when there may be more than one individual
with the same name. Display of these items is optional.
f. Individual's display is done "on-the-fly" instead of requiring individual HTML
files be created and stored online. This greatly reduces the space required on
the web site. It also allows large gedcom files to be handled expediously. The
regular WebbedGed program could, quite literally, require days to upload all
the individual Family Group page files. This would for all practical purposes
negate making changes once the files were uploaded and would require access to
extremely large amounts of web space be available to the user.
2. Limit the printing of "facts" about individuals to those specified by the user. Available
"gedcom cleaning" programs do not allow elimination of specific "facts".
3. Allow printing of LINKS for an individual based on whether or not a .lnk file exists for
the individual while still retaining the option of allowing visitors to add links of
their own on-the-fly.
The .lnk file can be used for storing "off site" links as well as "on site" links. An "off
site" link would be one that references someone else's web page (or your own web page located
on another server. An "on site" link would be one to another page on the same server where
this family tree is located, but could be an entirely different directory.
There is no limit to the number of links you may specify. Multiple individuals may reference
the same and/or different links.
4. For those user's who do not want additional .lnk files to maintain, a special method
has been provided for adding links to web pages with information pertinent to an individual.
This could be a story about the individual, special "notes" about an individual that you wish
to make "public", or whatever else you wish to display on the page linked to. The only
restriction is that the web pages linked to must be placed in a special directory recognized
by this program although it will be on your site. There is no limit to the number of links you
may specify. Multiple individuals may reference the same and/or different links.
The advantage of this type of link is that you maintain it right in your family tree program
instead of having to maintain a separate .lnk file. The disadvantage is the limitation of
where the linked to page may be located.
5. Allow for printing entire Source "file" as independent display while still allowing
the option of associating sources at the individual's level. Changed "inline" display
to be at the end of the individual's display for greater legibility.
6. Download the entire gedcom file instead of partial downloads while still allowing
option of whether or not gedcom download will be permitted.
7. Added buttons at the bottom of each page for maneuvering.
8. For those users who have very large family trees and have split them into smaller files, a
method for indicating that the parents and/or children of an individual can be found in
another tree (or database) has been provided.
For example: My family tree is split into the NC and SC people. My grandparents came from the
NC line and established the SC line. In the NC tree, one is directed to the SC tree for the
descendants of my grandparents. In the SC tree, one is directed to the NC tree for the
ancestors of my grandparents.
All of the original programs have been modified. So if you get the programs from the
original authors, the screens will not look like the ones on these pages. Hopefully, I will
shortly have these modified versions available for download.
