Mar. Court 1753 Mr Joseph Fulford made oath that he attended 12 days at September General Court Last and that he had a certificate for the same and that he carelessly lost the same and allowed.
Sept. Court 1753 "Joseph Fulford Jr Esq, George Bell, Sr is appointed commissioner for the roads on the no. east side of North River."
Dec. 4, 1753 The Carteret County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions convened in Beaufort Town "before His Majesties Justices Thomas Lovick, Moses Houston and Joseph Fulford."
Dec. 8, 1754 James Fulford was listed as one of the 70 men of "the Company of the North Shore, Belong (sic) to Capt'n John Shine's District from the Head of Broad Creek Down to the Mouth of the River" in Craven County. This may not have been James Fulford from Carteret. (SR XXII, p. 315)
1754 - 55 Militia Returns 1754 - 1755: "Carteret Foot . . . Capt'n Joseph Fulford (and) Will: Fulford (under command of) Coll. Tho: Lovick." (State Records, XXII, p. 307) Note: William Fulford was listed as an ensign in the original muster roll.
1755-60 North Carolina Militia returns for Carteret County listed "Joseph Fulford, Captain" and "William Fulford, Ensign" serving under "Thomas Lovick, Colonel." (Clark, p. 631)
Sept. Court 1756 The petition of Joseph Fulford Sr read in his words. And order that the Clerk send a certificate to the assembly to excuse him from all public levies.
Sept. Court 1756 Ordered that Edward Fuller, Joseph Fulford Esq, Cornelius Canaday be recommended to the Governor for him to appoint and commission one of them to be Sheriff for the County.
Sept. Court 1756 Joseph Fulford Esq, produced a commission from His Excellency the Governor therein appointing him Sheriff of this County which was read. He qualified agreeable to law.
June 15, 1757 Deed from "Joseph Fulford the Older" to William Fulford for 280 acres of land in "Newport on the Straits." Land obtained from Joseph Bell Esq., who held the original patent. Proved Sept. Court 1757. (Book F, p. 446)
Sept. Court 1757 A deed of sale or gift for 140 acres of land from Joseph Fulford Sr to William Fulford was proved in open court by the oath of Valentine Wade Esq and ordered to be registered.
June Court 1758 A deed of sale from Joseph Fulford, High Sheriff of the County of Carteret to Richard Turner for 300 acres of land in Carteret County was acknowledged in open court and ordered to be registered.
June 10, 1758 Joseph Fulford Jr. was administrator of the William White estate. He proved the inventory at the June Court 1759). (Bradley, Vols. II and III)
Sept. Court 1758 William Fulford is appointed constable in the room of Nathan Yeomans.
Nov. 27, 1758 Report of the Committee of Public Claims held at Edenton: "Mr. Joseph Fulford Late Sheriff of Carteret County was allow'd his Claim of ten pounds Proclamation Money as his Salary for the year 1756 he having fully Accounted with the Treasurer & paid all the taxes for that year." (Col. Rec. V, p. 976)
Mar. Court 1759 The three following persons to wit: Joseph Fulford, George Gibbons and Valentine Wade Esqs was nominated by this court to be recommended to His Excellency For one to be appointed Sheriff for the ensuing year.
Mar. Court 1759 Joseph Fulford Esq, came into court and prayed letters of administration on the estate of William White decd and granted, he complying with the act of assembly in that case made and provided. (Note: William White owned land on the "North side of Newport River" in Mar. 1752 and was "of Perquimmons County in Sept. 1753).
Mar. Court 1759 Joseph Fulford Esq, came into court and prayed a licence for to keep an ordinary at his now dwelling house at the mouth of the Straights and granted, he complying with the act of assembly in that case made and provided.
Mar. 22, 1759 The estate of James Fulford decd. was sold at public venue in Craven County. "Furnefold" Green and John Nelson were amoung the buyers, which did not include any Fulfords. (Bradley, Vol. III)
June Court 1759 An inventory of the estate of Thomas (sic) White Decd was exhibited in Court and proved by Joseph Fulford, administrator and ordered to be registered.
July 1760 Benjamin Fulford is born. Died Sept. 23, 1822, "age 62 yr 2 mo." Buried in the Fulford Cemetery, Sleepy Creek, Gloucester, N.C.
1760-63 Militia returns for Carteret County listed "Joseph Fulford, Major" serving under "Joseph Bell, Colonel." (Clark, p. 637)
17?? "Return of Officers of the North carolina Militia, Carteret Regiment" (undated) listed "Lieut. Col., Fulford, Joseph" second in command to Col. Joseph Bell. (Clark, p. 788)
Mar. Court 1761 The court allows Thomas Bell Esq to qualify William Fulford a Constable from the Head of North River to the Oyster Creek.
Mar. Court 1761 The Court orders that Joseph Fulford, High Sheriff of Carteret County do make out and settle his accounts of the County taxes for the year 1759.
Mar. Court 1761 Joseph Fulford Esq, produced to this court a commission from His Excellency Arthur Dobbs Esq, Governor, thereby appointing his Sheriff for the County of Carteret for the ensuing year, he giving security as the law directs with John Backhouse and William Dennis.
May 1761 The Vestry Book of St. John's Parish: "Vestry appoints Mr. William Fulford to agree with reader to perform divine services at Straights."
June Court 1761 Appoints William Fulford constable from Oyster Creek to the Head of North River and that he summons the inhabitants of his district to give in their list of taxables.
Jan. 30, 1762 Joseph Fulford witnessed the will of Elisha Bellknap joyner (sic) of Craven County (proved April 1762). At the time Bellknap drafted the will, he/she was "dwelling at South River in the house of Mrs. Elizabeth Martin" (who was the grandmother of Prudence Fulford, see below, Mar. 1767). Bellknap left "Landlady Elizabeth Martin all my estate." (Bradley, Vol. III)
Feb. Court 1762 Joseph Fulford Jr, late Sheriff, came into court and settled the list of tythables for the year one thousand seven hundred and fifty seven for four hundred and thirty one tythables exclusive of forty three delinquents.
Aug. 22, 1762 he Vestry Book of St. John's Parish: "Ordered that Capt. Joseph Fulford pay the inhabitants on the east side of North River on account of building the Chappell on the east side of North River."
May Court 1762 William Fulford constable from the Oyster Creek to the head of North River and that he summons all masters, mistresses of families and overseers of negroes and all single men within his district to give in their list of tythables
May Court 1762 A deed of sale from John Shackelford of Carteret County to Joseph Fulford Jr for 230 acres of land on Shackelford Banks was proved in open court by the oath of James Shaw sr and ordered to be registered.
Nov. 15, 1762 Joseph Fulford Junior patented "640 acres in Carteret on the West side of North river, joining Thomas Bell, a Marsh on the North side of Rustulls Creek, and (a point) about Three Quarters of a Mile from the river nigh John Simpson, Senior. (Patent Book 15, #6306, p. 448)
Nov. 9, 1764 Wm. Fulford, Wm. Dennis, and Joseph Morss Jr. patented "300 acres in Carteret on the W. side of North River, joining Joseph Morss Sr., Edward Fuller, a Savannah, and Shacklefords Creek." (Patent Book 17, #7437, p. 114).
Note: Orig. land grant 178, #394, B17, p. 114, says 250 ac., as does land grant 178, #445, B18, p. 103, both on "W. side of North River.".
June 1766 Joseph Fulford was witness or administrator's bond security for the will of Caleb Davis of Carteret County (Abigail Davis, adm.) (Bradley, Vol. I)
Sept. 26, 1766 Joseph Fulford Junr. claimed 300 acres in Carteret. Entered at April 1767 Court of Claims. (Haun, 1996, p. 106)
Mar. 30, 1767 Elizabeth Martin, widow of South River in Craven County, named her granddaughter, Prudence Fulford, in her will (no probate date).
Apr. 25, 1767 Joseph Fulford Jr. patented "300 acres in Carteret on the W. side of North River, joining the N. side of the W. Branch Between Rustells and Fullards Lands and sd. river, joining the S, side of Counacks Island, the sd. river, and the mouth of the W. Branch." (Patent Book 23, #5573, p. 24)
1770 John Easton sold land to George Fulford (H 407)
Mar. 7, 1770 "The Dwelling House of John Fulford was Consumed by fire in which he had the sum of Thirty Shillings proc. money, burnt and totally destroyed." (CR IX, pp. 112, 160-162)
June 17, 1770 Joseph Fulford deeded land on the west side of North River to his sons John and James Fulford. (G & H 383)
Dec. 19, 1770 "Mr Joseph Fulford, now upwards of eighty years" was exempted at a meeting of the Assembly in New Bern "from payment of Public, Parochial, and County Taxes" . . . he has been a resident in the Province since the year 1705 . . . He is now an Inhabitant of Carteret." (CR, VIII, p. 329)
Dec. 24, 1770 Joseph Fulford Jr. patented "100 acres in Carteret on the W. side of North River, joining the N. side of the Westermost branch of the river, Land Ambrose Jones purchased of Thomas Bell, the pocoson, the sd. Fulford, and the marsh and swamp." (Patent Book 20, #2758, p. 622)
Mar. 11, 1771 "At a Special Court of Oyer & Terminer and General Gaol (sic) Delivery began and held in Newbern . . . on Monday the eleventh Day of March A. D. 1771 . . . The Sheriff of Carteret County returned the following Persons for Grand and Petit Jurors": Joseph Fulford, Zachariah Harker, James Harker, Elijah Pigott, George Bell, Ross Bell, Wm Thompson, Esqr, Robert Reed, Malachi Bell, John Whitehouse, William Dennis, and George Brinharris. May 4, 1771 Joseph Fulford Jr. was granted "600 acres in Carteret on the W. side of North River above Fulford's old survey and above Simpsons land, joining Simpsons line 13 poles distance from the river side." (Patent Book 20, #1771, p. 471)
1772 Joseph Fulford (Jr.) lived on the W. side of N. River between Henry Chew, Wm. Coal, Thomas Rees, and Richard Caswell. (Patent Book 22, #3681, p. 55).
1773 George Fulford filed a claim for Lot #20 NT in Beaufort Town. (Town Old Minute Book, Kell, p. 145)
July 10, 1773 John Fulford planter and his wife Abigail sold Joseph Morse Junior for 15£ proclaimation money a parcel of land containing 150 acres on the West side of Nort river, below the westermost branch between Rustulls & Fullerd Lands & the river. The land was one half of a parcel given to John by his father Joseph Fulford. (Book H, p. 14)
June 1774 Deed of Gift from Joseph Fulford Jr. to son Stephen Fulford for 350 ac. (Book H, page 50)
May 13, 1775 Will of Joseph Fulford (Probate date not given): "In the Name of God Amen I Joseph Fulford Senr of Core Sound . . . Bequeath to Anne Fulford my Dearly beloved Wife four negro salves Named Jude, KAte, Nell & Silence to Disperse at her Death as She sees fit. I also Give unto Ann . . . all my Cattle and horses together with all my Land Interest within Fence . . . the use of all my Household furniture her Lifetime, but not to Dispose of at her Death. I Do give and Demise unto my Eldest Son Joseph Fulford in at the Deced of my Wife all my Lands together with the Buildings thereon . . . one Negroe Wench Named hague One Negroe Boy Named Prock, one Negro boy Named Snow ... to the said Joseph Fulford Junr his heirs and assigns forever. I bequeth unto my beloved son William Fulford one Negroe Wench Named Rose, One Negroe boy Named Robin, One Negroe Gairl (sic) Named Juda . . . I Likewise bequeth unto my beloved Daughters Mary: Sarah, Hannah, Nanny, Esther, Jenny & Sibble all my Cattle Horses and household furniture To be Equally Divided Amongst them after my Wifes Death. I also Constitute maake and Ordain my Dearly beloved Wife Ann Fulford the Sole Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament . . . . Joseph (his mark) Fulford." July 24, 1775 Abigail Fulford, daughter of John Williston Sr., was named in her father's will (proved March 1785).
